From the company's humble beginnings in the 1930s to the modern, innovative RVs of today, Airstream has a legacy that is built on quality, durability, and distinctive design. The company was founded in 1931 by Wally Byam, who was inspired by his love of camping and desire to create a travel trailer that was both lightweight and aerodynamic. Byam's first Airstream trailer was built in his backyard in California, and featured a unique aluminum exterior that was both durable and stylish. Byam's design quickly caught the attention of the public, and in 1936, Airstream introduced the Clipper, which was the company's first mass produced trailer.
